Modern photography or 19th C Pictorialism ?

QUESTIONNAIR. 

Due to needing to create a questionnaire/survey for my contextual studies BA Photography course work module at Llandrillo college, an impossible task face to face due to covid-19 I came up with the idea of sending an appeal to the LLANDUDNO IN OLD PHOTOGRAPHS for any willing participants. With a good response this is my selection of questions . All replies to be made per comment section , this way I will be able to copy and paste my results and analysis for the module as a word document.

My theme is the work of Victorian photographers in Llandudno. My work based on the work of Thomas Edge, La Roche photo studio, Francis Frith and Francis Bedford and Alvin Langdon Coburn ( American photographer who lived in Rhos On Sea for his final 18 years) The images taken during the 19th C era was pictorialism and my final images and theme recreating the same images and locations on the same techniques using photoshop.

I would like if possible take the opportunity like to ask as a future plan we have an exhibition planned for May and June and thinking of ideas or locations suitable but restricted due to covid-19. Have any of you got any practical ideas of potential venues open air for the exhibition ?

    Q3: WHEN DID YOU START TO HAVE AN INTEREST IN PHOTOGRAPHY ? No great interest but I have respect for photographers whose work captures things that we see everyday but don't see.
    The beauty in old buildings, animals and wildlife that we are too busy to look at.

    Q4: DO YOU PREFER DIGITAL IMAGES WITH CLARITY OR PICTORIAL ERA? Pictorial every time -I a prefer black and white, and sepia photographs.

    Q5: IS PICTORIAL PHOTOGRAPHY ART OR A SCIENCE ? Art, it adds a softer quality to the photograph..

    Q6: WHY DO YOU THINK PHOTOGRAPHY IS IMPORTANT ? Photography captures moments in time that may never happen again, allowing people to relive the moment. Photography is so important in history and helps us imagine what life was like.

    When I was about 8 years old. My father was a freelance photographer for all national newspapers.

    It depends on the image and the what that photo is being used for.

    Q5: IS PICTORIAL PHOTOGRAPHY ART OR A SCIENCE ?

    A painting is classified as Art, yet it has scientific parameters associated with it as far as technique, materials and the mixing of colours to make new colours. There is a science to it, but the science doesn’t need to be understood to create the art. Science itself relies on creative thinking to solve problems and for many, the solutions are so simplistically beautiful that it seems artistically created.

    Q6: WHY DO YOU THINK PHOTOGRAPHY IS IMPORTANT ?
    Because it captures moments that turns into memories.

    Q3: WHEN DID YOU START TO HAVE AN INTEREST IN PHOTOGRAPHY ? My first camera was a small snap camera in the 1980s then I upgraded it to a compact film camera. In the early 2000s I got compact digital cameras which led to getting an SLR in 2014.

    Q4: DO YOU PREFER DIGITAL IMAGES WITH CLARITY OR PICTORIAL ERA? As I mainly do landscape,object or animal photos i prefer the clarity of digital images which show colour and detail.

    Q5: IS PICTORIAL PHOTOGRAPHY ART OR A SCIENCE ? As pictorial photography is less focused and softer , I'd say it was more of an art as it shows emotions,less detail and harsh lines.

    Q6: WHY DO YOU THINK PHOTOGRAPHY IS IMPORTANT ? It's important in capturing events,people ,urban and landscapes of a certain time so these can be revisited in the future to compare society then and now.

    When I saved up for my 1st camera as a child. I went around Llandudno and took lots of scenery pictures

    Personally I prefer pictorial

    I think you could take aspect of both but if I had to chose I would say more art.

    Because it captures a moment in time to help future generations understand the reasons we did what we did. It captures a moment that can tell a thousand stories
